We all met at my folk's home and had a real nice time. Daddy fell and bruised his back, but other than being a bit sore, he's fine. Picked up several nice pieces over the last couple of weeks, mostly matte white and matte green pieces - my favorites. Also 'stole' Bobby the Baker cookie jar at the auction Sat. night for $20.00 Spent most of my Friday after TG, putting up more shelves and rearranging the displays. The flower committee at our Church has shown an interest in using some of our pottery in their various seasonal arrangements. It really is a shame to have all this stuff and not share it with others. May I invite you to visit my hometown's web site at www.selma-nc.com You'll find a listing of all the antique dealers (17 at present and still growing). ALSO - call the Smithfield-Selma Visitor's Bureau at 1 800 441-7829 and request they mail you a copy of "Hometown Living in Smithfield-Selma, North Carolina". Ask for the latest edition, 1999. (I'm sure I'm somewhere in the picture inside the front cover.) It should be free and there's several great articles on Selma's turning from a ghost town to an antique mecca. If you speak to Jean Massengill tell her you're an internet friend of Lee Peedin. If they have any copies of North Carolina Traveler, ask for that, too. More good articles and pictures on Selma. Good night for now. I picked up four Mc flower pots at an auction recently - averaged out about $8 each. A yellow lotus pot, two green violet pots and a small green one. I hadn't seen the two violet pots in any books. But I figure they were worth $8!! At least they are to me.....Anyway, going to another this weekend. Maybe I can luck up on some more. Good to hear from all of ya'. I first started with MS Power Point and created a slide for each item. I then inserted a picture of each piece along with a text box that had the Mark, Cost, Where I found it, etc.; however, PP has so much overhead that I very quickly had a file over 75 Meg. I then set up a speadsheet (old faithful) in Excel. I wanted to be able to view the digital picture that went with each listing so I started out inserting the picture in a cell, but that too caused a hugh file. Then I discovered HyperLinks. Excel is expecting a hyperlink to be to a web site or another MS Office file, but you can point it to any file type. Now all I have to do is click on the cell and the picture appears. It was a bit time consuming to enter the 120+ items, but it shouldn't be too hard to keep updated. If anyone else has some thoughts on cataloging or would like more info on what I did, please share. Most of my stuff (AND WE HAVE LOTS OF STUFF) is written down in one notebook or another from times we had our own shop or were in one mall or another. At this stage in the game, I could never catalog all of it even if we had a computer--tools, postcards, sheet music, books, and all the pottery we didn't sell when the mall where we had been for 9 years closed. We had a little of everything there but most of it went to auction except for the above-mentioned items. The applications I were referring to are part of the MicroSoft Office Suite. If you've got it, you got some powerful tools. If you don't and have survived so far without it, then you're probably better off - it's kinda expensive. As far as cataloging, I guess that's just a personal desire. Right now I could tell you where every piece of our collection came >from and how much we paid for it, but as I get older and the collection grows, I was afraid I'd lose track. My main purpose was so that my children and grandchildren (if we ever have any) will know which pieces are 'family' and which ones where purchased. Speaking of 'family' pieces, I have a small planter (Dutch Girl with sprinkler beside fence) and a wall pocket (Bird House with 2 blue birds) that are only marked USA. Recently while scanning through the Schroders Price Guide I found both of these described in the Shawnee section. Was pleased to find out what they were. They both belonged to my Grandmother and my Father says they've been around as long as he can remember. The Dutch Girl planter still has the price tag on the bottom (.25) During Thanksgiving I was looking at a picture of my Grandparents and guess what was setting on the table - a matte white lamp. I remembered it when I saw the picture, but no one seems to know where it is now. Who was it that was looking for the white lamp - must it be McCoy or will any 'old' lamp do. Will keep my eye out at the auctions. One way to keep your database down in size is to make the images only 72 DPI, since I don't think you are going to be doing high quality printing of these images, only viewing them. They only need to be 72 DPI since the screen only displays them at this resolution. An image at 1200 DPI takes up a lot more space and is not viewed any more than the 72 DPI screen resolution. You might look into Filemaker for your data base, or SQL, Oracle etc., We use Filemaker on the Mac, however there is a PC version as well. http://www.filemaker.com/ Regards, The List Mom _______________________________________________________________________ McCoy Pottery Online http://www.mccoypottery.com e-mail: listmom@mccoypottery.com List Server: http://www.mccoypottery.com/mailinglists Linking McCoy Lovers World Wide __________________________________________________________________________ McCoy Pottery Online T-Shirts available for only $15.95 + shipping Visit the new Cookie Jar Store: www.cookiejarstore.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From Karen.Phillips@trimmasters.com Thu, 3 Dec 1998 14:07:56 -0500 Date: Thu, 3 Dec 1998 14:07:56 -0500 From: Karen.Phillips@trimmasters.com Karen.Phillips@trimmasters.com Subject: Cataloging Collection Cataloging wirh pictures is a great idea. Floraline, yes, but not Econoline. But I haven't been into this too long either. I would be interested in an answer for that. Not too long ago, someone asked for the price on a cat on a cow cookie jar. I don't have the book that it is in, but I saw it at a flew market in Simpsonville, KY and it was marked $65.00. My friend who has the cookie jar book hasn't gotten back to me with a price but I will remind her today (again). I would like to make sure that the pottery I saw last night is McCoy. I saw a whole collection of dishes, canisters, salt and peppers, creamer, sugar, coffee cups, plates, etc. They are a cream color with blue and pink bands and the small pitcher (larger than the creamer) was marked with a small USA. I couldn't reach the other pieces to look at the bottoms. So is this McCoy. It is quite an extensive collection and the lady is considering selling it. I think if it is McCoy, then it is late, possibly LCC..... Can anbody give me an answer???? Would have no idea as to prices, though. On another subject, has anyone tried to get through to eBay today? I was up during the night and couldn't get back to sleep so was browsing on their pottery chat board. There was an announcement about shutting down for maintenance or something, and then it did while I was browsing through the McCoy. All of a sudden I couldn't bring up any of the pieces to look at them. It is now ll:30 a.m. and ever since about 8:00 a.m. I have not been able to connect to anything on eBay. That may mean they've been down for 8 or 9 hours. The only place I haven't been denied access is the Annoucements section, but then it doesn't connect. Karen - I have many stonecraft pink and blue pieces. They are my dinnerware - not display! I bought these piece by piece over 15 years ago, but do watch auctions on ebay. Last year I added a cookie jar (or large bean pot - not sure what it is) and a tea pot from an Ebay auction. Got both for $46.00 and was delighted with the "steal". It's a standard saying at our house that we eat off $26.00 plates, because I watched an Ebay auction and 1 dinner plate sold for that price about 2 months ago. The Sandfords Red book shows a good selection of the pieces on pages 150 - 151, but book prices are much lower than Ebay auctions (plates book for 10 - 12). Especially hard to find are two handled small casserole bowls and spaghetti bowls ( I broke mine two years ago, and still haven't found another one!). Have never seen candle sticks or tall mugs. If she sells and you're not buying, let us know!! Good luck. Ebay is definately down, Elizabeth. No Christmas shopping this morning! All are rare, but certainly the non production on is rarer...The black is going to have the lowest value, the tan a little higher value and the grey is going to have the highest value....I will not give values since the ebay is envolved...but lets say all three are in the hundreds each. Things get more curious-- The seller says the black base for the white kitten says 218 usa and McCoy. Well--the black base to the brown kitten says "219, McCoy USA" according to Roerig 91, on page148... AND the TAN base for the white kitten says "218 USA" only acc. to same on page 156. SO-----it seems as if this was a black base from the one with the brown kitten it would say 219 McCOY USA . Could there have been 3 production models---- .. WHITE KITTEN on BLACK-------218 MCCOY USA WHITE KITTEN on TAN------------218 USA BROWN KITTEN on BLACK-------219 McCOY USA .. Even more supportive of this view is that their is a BLACK base ONLY presently on EBAY and the seller refers to it as #218--which would mean it would go with the white kitten---if it was the base for the BROWN KITTEN it would be marked #219. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- End of McCoy Pottery List Digest From Sun, 27 Dec 98 20:00:01 -0600 Date: Sun, 27 Dec 98 20:00:01 -0600 From: Subject: McCoy Pottery List Digest #30 - 12/27/98 McCoy Pottery List Digest #30 - Sunday, December 27, 1998 McCoy Cookie Jar.
