I (Terry) and the Domain known as http://www.mccoypottery.com/ . are located near Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. I know there are a lot of McCoy and Cookie Jar people within 100 miles of here. Sheryl Hi Sheryl: Yes, I too have gotten disappointed with the annual McCoy Lovers Reunion and the Pottery Festival in general due to the over priced items that collectors are trying to get that week as well as the dealers etc....I collect McCoy as a passion not a greed buiness. Perhaps its time for a new Mecca...Since the Roseville, Zanesville Mecca only exists in the past. I believe that the journey to the Ohio festival is too long for me anymore and as you say no bargins. Clemens Pottery Hi all, This is my first msg. with AOL 4.0 so I hope I'm doing this right! :) I'm new to McCoy pottery. I got into it when I went on eBay looking for old planters to use in my new home. (I'm especially interested in the Capri, Cascade, and Harmony lines due to the styles of rooms they are housed in). And within about three months, there are about 15 McCoys now in my house. :) To the person who had a bad experience on eBay, I definitely sympathize... I had two bad eBay experiences one as a buyer and one as a seller, but it was two out of probably a hundred transactions so far (my ID is guitar). Don't give up! One trick I do if I am concerned about the reliability of a seller is I e-mail the seller first to ask a question - think of something you'd like to know first even if slightly trivial. This will allow you to judge his/her helpfulness and promptness. If the seller doesn't reply or isn't helpful, that is a big clue! Anyhow, I have seen planters on eBay listed as "Mt. Clemens Pottery" pieces. As I lived near Mt. Clemens, Michigan for nine years and still live in Michigan, I'm very interested in how Mt. Clemens Pottery tied in with McCoy. I tried some research on the Web and read a little on Mt. Clemens Pottery, but nothing was mentioned about McCoy. Any insight would be grateful in easing my curiosity!!! While perusing my e-mail caught a reply something about Michigan, but I must have missed the original post. Is there a McCoy event coming up in Michigan? Thanks so much in advance! My grandmother lives in Roseville so I've had several occasions to visit during the festival. Don't go with the idea that you'll buy much. Anyway, someone brought up the idea that we would should start our own Midwest festival up this way. Anyone who wants to start organizing it, let me know. About the Mt. Clemens Pottery Company. McCoy sold the company to Mt. Clemens in 1967 but Nelson McCoy remained President. The "mark" on some of the pieces during this time was "MCP" but I believe it was added to the McCoy logo, thought I think I have seen "MCP" alone. The Mt. Clemens Pottery Company is the one here. But they sold the McCoy rights, I believe I'm right here,( someone correct me if I'm wrong, please), to the Lancaster Company and then that company folded. Hope this helped. The book came out in 1988 and is still available from Collector Books, I think, and book stores should be able to order it . According to Lois's book, and you will be impressed with all her research, the pottery closed for good in 1969. I didn't want to let on how I knew, but maybe it's ok to brag. Lois is a retired school teacher and farm wife. She did all her compiling of research without the benefit of a computer. It was our privilage to get to know her. There is an old railroad town near me (Selma, NC) that was all but a ghost town until recently when someone had the bright idea of turning it into an antiques town. Now there are over 20 renovated buildings housing antiques and another 12-15 in the process. As is the case in most all these type shops, the prices are a bit high, but it they provide some great browsing. Last weekend, the town had its annual R/R days celebration and invited antique dealers >from all over to set up on the streets. What a bonanza! Came home with 15 new additions at very reasonable prices. Had one of the "experts" to appraise a piece I bought several years ago at a flea market for $3.00 - It is signed, but no one has been able to identify it. The expert said it was definately North Carolina Pottery ( color of the sand) and it was produced between 1890 & 1900. Due to it's bright white glaze he appraised it at $60-$70. Guess I got lucky on this one, but would really like to find someone who could identify the signature. It doesn't show up clearly enough in a picture. The only way to get a good image is do a pencil etching. If anyone thinks they might could help, please let me know - not going to attach anymore pictures to messages on the list (ha). Hope everyone had a great weekend "hunting". Guess I'll have to catch my breath next weekend as I'll be at the beach for a week of fishing (3rd week in Oct. ritual). Brought home 9 pieces on Sat. but there's two I hope some of you can help with. The first is a log planter. Had to look long and hard before my wife found the McCoy signature. On the lower left corner of one side was "USA", but on the lower right corner was McCoy. Both were in very small print - less than a 1/4" even though the planter is 8" long. I found a log planter in the Huxford book, but I don't think they're the same. It doesn't have the wagon wheel as in the Huxford picture. The following items are part of the mold: a chain that appears to wrap around the log; a two man cross-cut saw on one side; and an ax on the other side. Almost past this item up thinking it was unmarked. Found another planter at the auction on Sat. night, but recognized it from Huxford. It's the two shell green planter. Its mark is also less than 1/4" and the small c in McCoy is almost invisable. The second and most interesting (to me) item >from this week end is a small (4"-5") blue vase. It is only marked USA, but I believe it to be Brush, since the S is larger than the U & A. I think it was here than someone said that was a Brush characteristic. The interesting thing about it is that the USA is backwards. A reversed mold? Can anyone shed any light on this. Was it a "mistake"?, would the mold continue to be used?. Have I found a "real" treasure? Saw a piece on ebay last week that had a reverse McCoy and it was being "sold" as a unique piece. Either way - I like it and I didn't miss a meal due to the price. You know - it's nice to find a piece that the "books" list a higher value than was paid, but values really don't concern me that much. I buy McCoy because I just love to look at it. We have nearly 100 pieces displayed in our den and sometimes I just love to imagine the stories each piece could tell. Especially the 40-50 year old pieces. Who ate cookies from that jar? - was that planter sent to someone in the hospital - was this piece a gift to someone that stuck it back for 40 years until their child or grandchild decided to clean up? And as much as I like some of the unusal pieces, I can't possibly imagine why anyone would have ever bought something like that new - was it a "joke". Well guess I've babbled on enough for one night. In case you haven't noticed I'm obcessed with old pottery - especially McCoy. I'm serious about everyone coming to Selma and let's have a get together. We went to a flea market this afternoon. We don't buy much anymore, but there wasn't much in the way of unusual McCoy there--a Grecian piece but it was badly crazed in the bottom inside and out. We passed. The NM mark is very small on some of the pieces and hard to see. I had one brown and green piece that had that mark--the only marked piece of all the 35 in our collection. The log planter someone described sounds like one I had a number of years ago in a cream and green. They're not very common if I'm thinking of the right one. There is a smaller log planter that comes in several colors and is sometimes trimmed in gold. Midnight and bedtime is calling. She and my father were seriously injured in an auto accident in 1982 (passengers in a neighbor's car and no one had on seatbelts). Also, my husband had a heart attack in April. He is doing very well--didn't have to have angioplasty--but he is enrolled in a rehab program and hates to miss too often. We do still go to Zanesville for pottery festival time and are involved with the Mccoy Lovers. You will occasionally find these gold trimmed also. The u S a mark (with the large S) is a distinguishing Mark of the Brush Co. If you can, note the size. Most repros will be slightly, or even noticeably smaller than the real McCoy (pun intended) We have seen several at flea markets and they are usually being sold as the real thing. Watch out so you do not get burned. We have been thinking about putting some of the more popular repros on the web site, however upon trying to take pictures of some at a local flea market we were stopped by the seller, who was quite upset as we had stood by a collection of Cauliflower Mammys and Indian Heads warning passer by of their real value. Hello. I need your advice. My mother-in-law is up in Illinois (Naperville) and found the pinecone McCoy teapot set (the teapot, creamer, and sugar dish). She said that the teapot is in good condition but does not have its lid. It's priced at 40$ for the teapot and 18$ for the creamer/sugar. Now, I love this teapot and have had my eye out for it, but how much does the value drop on a teapot without a lid? Should I hold out for one with a lid? Vanessa, If you've ever visited eBay, the auction site, I can tell you that there are numerous times when they have had the entire set up for bid. Now, a mint set usually goes for about $76, I've seen some lower and some higher. Of course, it depends on who wants it bad enough at the time and how many are being offered at the same time. My advise is to hold off. Like the other respondent wrote, I think it would be very difficult to just find a lid. You would have to wait and hope that you could come across another teapot that's in bad shape with an intact lid and buy it. I wouldn't hold my breath. Check out eBay.com. Hope this helps. Things were slow on Sat., Sun., & Mon. but early Tue. afternoon we notice the dolphins feeding about 300 yards from the pier. In just a short while the spots started biting as fast as we could bait our hooks. This went on for over 6 hours. In about 1.5 hrs I had a cooler full (110) - all the spots I wanted. Spent all morning Wed. dressing them. I spent the rest of the week flounder & drum fishing and caught several nice ones. Had a real good run on drum on Fri. morning. Let them biting! Maybe they'll still be there when I get back.
