I am new on the list and to McCoy. I have just bought a few pieces at auctions. Just the other night at an auction there was a Snow White McCoy Cookie Jar. It was in such good condition that the auctioneer (A licensed appraiser) thought it was a reproduction. Farther study showed a considerable amount of yellowing inside and some crazing on the very bottom. He was then convinced it was just in great condition. To make a long story short. I bid up to $75 and lost it. It was not listed in my cheap antiques guide. Does anyone know the value of this piece? Chiquita, I am not the person who sent the previous message but I have been wanting to ask you some questions. First let me say thank you for being so kind to share your knowledge with we newbies. I started collecting cookie jars in 1959 but I had no idea that a lot of what I had was McCoy until about a year ago so I am really learning a lot. I discovered that I already had a pretty good collection of pottery without really knowing when I brought together all of the old pots, vases etc. that my Grandmother, Mother and I had. I got the HNH books and began studying but I am confused. If the book says the item was marked and I find one in a shop that is not marked but matches the description and the picture is it a fake? Can you tell anything about RRP Co.? My Grandmother's jardinaire is marked that way. She probably bought it in the 1920's. She was born in 1894 and died in 1948 so it has to be somewhere in there. My mother says she had it when she was a child and Mom was born in 1920. I also have an owl shaped wall pocket of Grandma Clara's. It is not marked at all. It seems to me to be more like majolica paint colors rather than McCoy. It has several bright colors on the breast feathers. I really appreciate your help in finding out about these pieces. If you can, refer to a specific item about being unmarked and the book saying marked and I'll see if I can answer. Occasionally more than one company might have used the same mold and one co. could have marked and the other not. There are a couple of items that I think Shawnee and McCoy both made, One being the tulip vase. This is a vase with a tulip in the design on both sides of the vase. It can be found marked McCoy so that one obviously is McCoy. However, the same style vase can be found in an OLD Shawnee book that I have ( I don't have the newer books on shawnee). I've seen this vase marked USA and I'm thinking the Shawnee one is the USA one. This could be just one example of what you're asking. In addition to situations like this, sometimes the same item might be both unmarked and marked. I don't think there is an exact correct answer for this question. Anytime you want to e-mail me about a specific piece I'll try to help. I think you've done well to have the Hanson/Nissen books. A third one will be out in the future, not soon though. spring of 2000 was the original estimate. Rrpco is Robinson Ransbottom Pottery C ompany....also of Roseville Ohio. sometimes it is confused by some with Roseville simply because it has Roseville on the bottom of some items. This is an old company that is also still in operation in Roseville. A book on their wares should be out by this fall and I think will help the collectibility of RRPco. I like some of their older vases quite well. On the owl wall pocket, I'm not sure without a photo. Brush Pottery made an owl wall pocket and it could have come in a majolica finish as well as a matte finish. Hope this helps. I have a harmony planter, white with brown and gold along the rim and the entire base is in gold. It is marked McCoy USA with the 23 K Gold Guaranteed marked in gold. This one I'm sure is McCoy. However, I have a piece just like it in green with some white kind of dribbling down from the rim, gold along the rim, and the bottom has a gold line around the base. I have several bean pots with tne maple leaf (none with a plant number though). I found the wording confusing. If you have one with a plant number though, I think it would be an older one, but really am not sure. The Schroeders gives it's source and that would probably be the best bet to figure it out. Forty dogs in six months is a horrible record! Check your local animal shelter, and see if there is something you can do to help! Write your state representatives to encourage laws to prevent this type of breeder from existing! There are good breeders and bad! If you go to buy a puppy from a pet store, do all you can to check out the breeder/kennel from whom it was purchased by the store!
