Hello..
I acquired a cookie jar in the shape of an ice cream cone. The bottom
has USA and the number 159 on it. I've looked on the auction site and
the people list that as a McCoy cookie jar. The only problem is, the
top of mine looks like the ones they list as Doranne. I've got pics if
anyone can help me out.
Thanks

Subject: [Mccoypottery-talk] glaze scuff on vase?
Hi!
I was wondering how much a glaze scuff would affect the value of a
piece? I found an "arrowhead" vase in a 2nd hand store......was
surprised to find it, and asked about it. The woman said they had
thought it was in very good condition until she washed it w/
simple-green and some paint washed off, revealing a 1/2" x 1/4" glaze
scuff. It's right on the front, on the edge of one of the leaves. It's
noticeable when you look at the vase up close, but since the clay and
the glase are both white, i doesn't stand out too much.......but still,
it's there. Originally the price was $49, but now because of the damage
she found, she's selling it for $25 (which she says is $5 less than they
paid for it a few years ago.) Do small amounts of damage always alter
the value? I've been looking for an arrowhead vase, this one still looks
good sitting on a shelf, no other damage, and $25 is with-in my budget,
but i'm hesitant to buy it because of the missing glaze
spot.......Thanks for any info/opinions/advice!

I am no expert on McCoy but do own 60 or so pieces right now. If I really wanted to own
that Arrowhead the glaze scuff wouldn't cause me a moments concern. If, as you say, it
isn't noticeable at a distance it will be a wonderful addition to your collection for
your own enjoyment. If you don't point out the damage to your friends they will never
see it. Things I buy for my own enjoyment don't have to be perfect because I don't
demand perfection in self, friends or possessions. Investments I am choosier about.

Same here. If I really like a piece and I want it, I will buy it damaged
providing it isn't too noticeable. I sometimes keep it until I find a
'perfect' one and then sell the damaged one. I bought a wide lily vase
that had two small chips on the rim for $16.00. So far I haven't found
another cheap enough to replace this one but unless I point out the chips,
no one has noticed. I am happy with it as it displays well. It's probably
a matter of how badly you want it and how much you can give for it.

I just watched my tape and it did tape very well. I admit that all I watched was the
cookie jar segment. Since we had heard in advance that Martha Stewart had been so sick the
taping was postponed I got the giggles watching Chiquita avoid the flu bug. She did such
an excellent job. My neighbor said he didn't have the second vcr hooked up today. Does
some one else out there have the ability to copy it. I will be more than glad to send my
tape on and just let every one look at it and copy if possible. I have found that 99 o/o
of the strangers in this world are trustworthy friends once you meet them and I am not
afraid of you having my home address to return this to me some day. I will see tonight if
I can locate someone that can copy this. However rest assured there is a good tape in
existence. Betty

cookie
jars up for sale so I HAD to buy a W.C. Fields jar. Really like it. Jill

Haven't checked out tapes yet, but hopefully we got the segment. MS is
on here (St Louis) in the middle of the night and half the time the
local stations put on shows that skew the showing time. We have been
taping the shows but half the time only get half the show. I may be
putting myself on the 'tape" list. :-)
Found a large cylinder cookie jar (apple, center of page 228 in the HNH
vol II book) for fifty cents at a yard sale. It's in pretty good
condition, with most all of the cold paint still intact. However, it
had the wrong lid. Does anyone have an extra lid? Looks as though all
the cylinder jars have the same lid.
Please let me know if you have any info on how I can get one. Even
without the right lid, for fifty cents, I couldn't pass it. up.
Thx, Rebecca

they did the whole show with you but it was a good touch to have the cookie
jars on the shelves while they were baking cookies. I taped the show with a
new VCR and later found that it taped channel 4 while I was watching Martha
on channel 2! I would love to get a copy. When someone gets it together, let
us all know how much and where to send the money and address.
On another note, I got a great buy this past week-end. I left a bid on a bid
board auction for a #7 oil/sand vase in light green. It was on a back shelf
and only marked "old stoneware vase, minimum bid $25." I bid $35 and forgot
about it until I was in Pennsylvania again and stopped in. It is mine! I have
been starting to sell on-line and was going to sell it but, as usually
happens, I fell in love with it and can't let it go.
Jackie

Hi, all!
The wedding went wonderful, and was absolutely beautiful! Held on the 31st floor of the Regal Hotel overlooking Cincinnati! My mother's flight was delayed coming out of Cincy, and since she's a TWA employee, she had to be on standby...so I missed Chiquita on TV...I would love to have a copy also!
Another note on the cookie jar without a lid....fill the bottom with river rock gravel and sand, and use as a planter! I've done this with some for african violets..also, when you rinse out your milk jug when it's empty...pour the rinse water onto the soil of the african violets (don't wet the leaves!)...makes them go like crazy!!!
Chiquita...I'm so proud! Did Dewey go with you? How was the trip? We want details...LOL...Jeanette

Thanks for the great tips on using the lidless cookie jar. I would love

Jill:
I have that cookie jar!!! It was a wedding present to my aunt in the
40's. I was in an antique store and the lady had a book that listed
this jar. Of course I can't remember the book name.
Does your kitty have any gold? There were several varieties. Also,
check her tail....some have a tail that stops at the paw and others
have a long tail that wraps over the paw. The gold trim and long tail
cat have a higher value.
Mine is a long tail (no gold) and listed for over $125 and I am not sure
of the date of publication of the book.
Your right about the "lady" reference. I just love that jar. What a
sweet face. Rebecca

Rebecca, thanks for the info on kitty. Her tail is wrapped around her and
ends on her
paw. She has no gold but does have a big reddish bow around her neck with
yellow
on the hat and a line of blue above her paws. Does yours have a shawl around
her?
I brought her up from the basement and put her in the kitchen where she

E-mail me for my address (guess I've seen to many horror stories to just

Hi,
I know this is a McCoy chat but I have a Shawnee book (and own the Puss'n
Boots creamer and salt & pepper). These cookie jars range in price from
$175-$200 -short tail basic painting, $200-225-long tail-the tail covers part
of the front paw, to $550-800 for gold trim with varing decals applied. These
are 1998 values, Shawnee Pottery by Jim and Bev Mangus. I collect McCoy but
grew up with the Puss 'n Boots in our kitchen.

Hi All:
Sorry I didn't get back to you yesterday but I have been getting much

I stopped and bought some blank tapes and some bubble envelopes and had
them weighed for shipping rates. Of course we all know that any one
even thinking about 'selling' tapes will probably go directly to jail
and not even pass go!!! That certainly was not my intention. I am just
trying to accommodate anyone that missed a good show of McCoy. The
blank tapes were $1.97 on sale at Walgreens and Bubble envelopes on sale
for .50. Tack on our 6% sales tax and you have $2.62. The bulk rate is
the slower than snail mail like book rate for only $1.13 or a total of
$3.25 Priority Mail is 2.09 for a total of $4.71. If you have PayPal
that is great or I will trust you to send me your check. Think it would
be easier and safer for you to E-mail me direct and tell me what way to
ship and even if you want the entire hour or just the McCoy part.

the Richwood Auction Center, 15 W. Blagrove St., northern Union County,
State Routes 37 & 47, on Sat., Oct. 28, 10:00 a.m., with preview Fri.,
Oct. 27, from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. Doors open at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.
For a mail flyer, call one of the auctioneers--Ted L. Pfarr (740)
494-2040, or Nigle Stanley (937) 592-7534.
The ad says there are some pieces with minor chips or repairs, but most
are in good to excellent condition.
I'm not going to copy the ad, but there are over 600 pieces, with 550+
being McCoy, many from the 1940's and some earlier.
Thought this might be of interest.

Well, about a week ago i posted a question here about whether or not i
should purchase an arrowhead vase if it had a chip on it. I agreed w/
the people who said "buy it----- if you really like it, the glaze scuff
won't matter". I bought it and i do love it. I think it's such a
graceful vase, and it looks very pretty on my shelf.
So thanks to those that answered.......it's a lovely piece...........and
it was fun to take out of the box once i got home and look at all over
again ;)
