So I purchased it. I also went to get the Sandford's book at B&N bookstore. It had a production date of 1997. Is that the most current date? I thought on the web site it showed that the Sandford's book was just published. I wanted to get it at the bookstore so I would have it quicker than ordering it from the web. Also does anyone have suggestions on how to clean the cookie jars. Some of them are dirty and have tape goo and sticky gunk on them. Is there a different way to clean the cjs that are "cold painted" where you can feel the paint outside the glaze vs the ones where the paint is inside the glaze? I don't want to wash or rub the paint off. Thanks for any tips. I am saving up to buy a McCoy Reference Book, so I am trying to pick up all I can off the internet in the meantime. I have found that surfing thru the auctions online and reading the seller comments is useful as well as the McCoy home page. This is the way I became a little familiar with some of the pieces that are tigers and panthers. I found a tiger at an auction which looked vaguely familiar. The only ones I could find online were planters. It is definitely not a panther. It stands at 7" at the head. It has its mouth wide open in a roar. It is about 12" in length. It is painted a really dark green, in fact its back looks almost black. There is a small amount of brown underneath. The more I study it, the more I think it is a "McCoy want to be". I only spent $3.00 on it, so maybe it will be a cheap lesson learned. If anyone has any comments, please share. Thanks! Karen: I know your concerns about repro's but sometimes you just have to take the chance. I, however choose to take that chance at a much lesser cost. A couple of weeks ago I found a pot bellied stove cookie jar at a tag sale for $1.50. It was clearly marked McCoy and is in perfect condition. I couldn't believe my luck. So, even if it were a repro (which I am certain it is not) I wouldn't be out much money. Got lucky at a tailgate sale yesterday and purchased a pretty wall pocket for $8 and found out when I got home it was a McCoy. My first wall pocket and a pretty one at that. I find most of my real bargains at garage, yard and tag sales. Not to mention thrift stores. If it's up at auction, chances are you'll pay a lot more. Auctions can be great fun though. Happy hunting. You just never know where you are going to find that special piece. :-) Becca From brown99@qis.net Mon, 4 Jun 2001 13:35:43 -0400 Date: Mon, 4 Jun 2001 13:35:43 -0400 From: sheldon brown brown99@qis.net Subject: [Mccoypottery-talk] Books... For the people who started collecting Mccoy pottery. I have found that the higher priced cookie jars and other pottery items, are the ones that has been repo. I would feel that if I paid 20.00 or less (at a yard sale) for a mccoy cookie jar it would be a very good buy. I would hope that you would buy it because you liked it with not having to spend much money. I know there is a list of cookie jars that has been repo. I found it in "Collector's encyclopedia of Cookie jars" book II. Page 332. e-mail me if you don't have the list. I will try to send you a copy. (NOT CJ'S!) Dear Kelly, There is a list of fakes started on the McCoy web site. One of the items listed is the Bird on Flower Wall Pocket. I am also certain that one of the larger Lily Bud wall pockets is being reproduced and sold on ebay. If you have HNH vol 1 look at page 108 and 109. I am very suspecious when one of the 8" pockets is listed in a strange color or with different markings. I have emailed 2 sellers asking if they would guarantee that thier pieces were not fakes and both withdrew their auctions. One I believe was sincerely duped and didnot realize. Also it seems on ebay that Private Auction is a sign that the item might be a fake and the seller knows it. I am not sure why they use this feature unless it is to keep bidders from talking to each other or to keep experts from emailing warnings. I have received warnings from 2 different people warning me that an item was not McCoy. Those people who do that are taking big chances to help strangers out but they do not want people to be cheated. I was wondering if 9 PM Tuesday night might be a good time to meet. Starting Tuesday 6/12 I will go to the chat room and I hope that you will all try to meet me. He has hundreds in his shop and it was quite a sight to see! He deals at the Annual National Cookie Jar Show and knows just about everyone involved with McCoys. Anyway, he told me to be on the lookout for repros in other pieces besides cookie jars. I have only seen one basket piece redone (which I bought cheaply because I wasn't sure). He then showed me a reproduction of the smaller hand tray shown on page 112 of Sanford's. I couldn't believe it - it looked exactly the same and in the beautiful aqua glaze. I have this piece in yellow and could compare: His repro was slightly smaller, definitely lighter, WAS MARKED NM as the original, but the interior of the underside was not glazed and just solid bisque (the interior of mine is entirely glazed). Can we maybe list 2 or 3 days as a "regular" meeting time for people to join in? Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays sound good to me. We could even give it a window of time to join in from 7:00 to 9:30 EST and that way people could just stop by when they had the chance on those days/times. Let me have everyone's thoughts!!! It's exciting to see so many people as enthused and hooked on McCoy as me - I've only met one other person locally who understands my habit... :-) BARB: I think I could have sat with Red for hours and listened... I do not know what the guide lines are for what you can or can't post here. I have never been told whether or not it is acceptable to post a picture here to have some one help identify. No one ever has, but that could be that they just don't know that they can. I think most all of us know that looking on e-bay can help in judging to value of piece. There is another place to post for things you are looking for. e-Wanted.com. You list the item you are wanting to purchase and can post a photo if you have one. There is no charge for posting and very small fee if you make a purchase. I have bought a couple of items and sold a couple of things. It is another fun place to kill time and get an education.
