We all agree that the "book" value of any thing is an intangible thing,
only a guide line. If you look at http://www.SLG-proauction.com/ and
click on special auction you will see pictures of some of the pottery
pieces offered Sunday here in Des Moines. This auctioneer is a friend
and someone I trust totally. He never sells a damaged piece that the
flaw is not pointed out. He would never willing, knowingly sell a
reproduction. I have never known him to picture any thing on the
auction page that was not in perfect condition. I have every intention
of attending this auction and I may not buy much but I am going to take
my paper and pencil to record prices from here in the middle of the
country.
It would be wonderful if all people selling were honest. Since that is
not so I heartily recommend that you take reference books along even
when garage sale-ing. McCoy or any other pottery shouldn't be used as
an investment unless you have the knowledge to back it up. If you are
not using it as an investment then never pay more for the piece than you
would if it had no name and you were just buying it because you like the
looks of the piece. Betty in Iowa
