Hi, and a happy 2003 to fellow McCoy hunters. One of my resolutions was to
try to write up a concern and ask for your reactions. I thoroughly enjoy
the chat and pottery on this loop. However, for about two months I have not
tried even to read the emails that show up with attachments.

Oh my. I guess I ate the wrong thing....around here it is what they call
"Hoppin' John". A soup make with black-eyed peas, rice and pork. But we
have greens and more rice with ours. First the rice, then greens and then
the "hoppin' john"on top. I guess KY uses greens instead of cabbage. : )
I for one, love this site although I don't contribute alot, I do get much
from it and enjoy the conversations. Happy New Year to all!!! Happy
McHunting, too.

By attachments, do you mean when people send a photo for help with
identification?
With webTV we don't seem to have a problem with viruses.
I don't like colored print and background because sometimes it comes
across as difficult to read on a TV screen, but I muddle through.
We had pork, sauerkraut and dumplings, and mashed potatoes at our son's
house, and also some barbecued beef ribs for good measure (or
something). I contributed homemade bread from my machine (no mix for
me).
Hope you all have a great 2003 and find lots of McCoy for your
collections.

Thanks for your thoughts--on AOL the list of emails shows a little blue
square if there is an attachment. I used to read the emails and maybe look
at the attachment and maybe not, but sometime in November I just opened one
of the emails and it started to download at once. So help me, I hadn't gone
anywhere near the attachment, LOL.
So I got a bit scared and quick deleted, and since then I guess I back off a
little. Just a coward! On New Year traditions, my Cuban neighbors all have
twelve grapes--one for every month of the coming year--to bring luck, I
think. The grapes can be eaten any time on New Year's Day, though a lot I
think have them at midnight. I found out when one of the children next door
brought me grapes, all neatly on a plate with clear wrap--then she had to
explain the custom; did a nice job too!

Hi,
I just got the grissoft free software. I had an expired Norton and had my
hard drive destroyed. I found it at www.komando.com (Kim Komando has a radio
computer talk show and she recommends this free software and has access to
it on her website).
I know this is not McCoy talk but if your hard drive is destroy, there is no
talk or buying or selling of McCoy on-line. I had auctions on e-bay before
Christmas that I could not access and spent hours on-line with Dell support
trying to fix my computer.
I'm finally back on-line.
Happy New Year to everyone!
(Pickled herring for luck in my family (not for me!)
Jackie

the piece is called usually, cat at the spiining wheel or scottie at the
spinning wheel...It did come in the different color combination but i don't
really think that would affect the value....

Hello Tom,
The bowl is fine. I asked because people do mention on the list what
and where they have things for sale. It doesn't matter to me, and
sometimes I do check things out. I think I asked the question before
and didn't get an answer.

I really have no problem with this. The only guidelines listed for the
list at lists.mccoypottery.com concern the length of signatures.. Other
than that I cannot see a problem with that, assuming there are not 10
URL's listed or some ridiculous amount.

For all rules/faq, etc. you can visit lists.mccoypottery.com

More specifically:

As to signatures from the Netiquette section of lists.mccoypottery.com

Keep Signatures Short :

Five or six lines is okay. Longer is questionable. Keep your content
within good taste so you don't offend the other members of the list.

is good enough anything longer is not only way too long and in poor
taste but rude when you need the space for the topics of the
dicussions lines are limited so we all must be considerate of others.

yesterday at Marketplace on Main in Logan Ohio. I can't remember the price.

you know with most email programs you can edit options so the email
doesn't go out with any color just send in plain text no html! I set
my preferences to ask me how to send it because my mail is netscape
and written with html composer instead of plain text in case I have
to add a link. Backgrounds are nice sometimes but they do make for a
larger sized email message the backgrounds are counted in kb the same
as the text is and many people have limited space on their mail server
and inboxes can get very full I know web tv users have limited space
I always get a mailbox full when I try emailing my Mom cause she
rarely checks her email My brother ( both my Mom and Brother are
disabled with different conditions they take care of each other )
usually does it and leaves it there they both have a unit LOL but
still argue over who will go online when with only one phone line . I
gave both of them a unit for xmas last year because they didn't want
the responsibility of a computer . My Mom now Wants to start
collecting pottery at age 74 . She has so far a few new CJ"s and a
Hall teapot we had since I was a kid she dug out ast year. anyway
when and if everyone gets individual emails check the size in KB on
this reply and thee original and see if they are almost as big I
rarely include the originals so I am sure this will not be yellow.

We love our webTV and also don't think we would want to bother with a
computer. I am 70 and my husband is 79, and we have enough "stuff" in
our house. We don't have lots of McCoy anymore but used to buy every
piece we could find. It was so CHEAP in the mid- to late-70's that you
wouldn't believe. I am sure Chiquta would back us up on that. Twice we
bought whole collections for an average of about $2.00 apiece, including
some cookie jars if I remember correctly. Nobody knew what the brown
and green stoneware was, and that was my colection.

I believe this message is in response to a previous message about one of our
member's mother beginning to collect McCoy at age 74. I'm not willing to
part with many pieces, but I'd sure be happy to add to her collection if I
have something she'd like...just send her address to me privately and let me
know what she likes, OK?

I do see something wonderful (or perhaps odd, different and unusual) in
reading about one of our members who, at age 54, still has healthy and active
parents. You are so fortunate - I'm so happy to read your message and to
know that you understand exactly how lucky you are. Good for them!

Tom,
You'll make it! Our "kids" are 43, 40, 39, 37, & 32. They just hope we
get rid of some of this stuff before we die. However, a couple of them
have the bug for collecting, and the youngest sells on ebay and from a
web site. She hated it when she was young and we were going strong
with our McCoy collecting. It keeps us out of trouble and off the
streets, if people our age can still get into trouble. LOL

Oh. I thought the original author was implying that her
father saying he was talking to the "kids", was unusual. ;-)
I don't think it is unusual for parents of any age to call
their children "kids/children", regardless of their ages.

My mother is very spry at 80, so I just never think
about people having parents who are not. So, I certainly
didn't think starting a collection was unusual.

I bought a dish/ashtray at an auction that is muddy tan/brown in color and

and sat on my desk at work with candy in it.
One of my employees knocked it off my desk and broke it. I'm looking for
another if anyone has one for sale.

I used to have a friend, Atlanta native, who mentioned
eating Hoppin John. He said it was made w/ BE Peas &
Rice and I never pursued the recipe past those 2 items
(don't like either). ;-)

Growing up in OK, I don't remember hearing of any "traditional"
New Year's foods, other than black-eyed Peas (yuk). I never
eat them, so I hope that hasn't "damaged" my "luck". ;-)

BTW -- I have a McCoy question. Some of the McCoy pieces
seem to just be marked USA on the bottom (no McCoy).
Was that done during a certain period of time or was it
done always for only certain items or what??

One explanation for some of the usa marks ...The high dollar department
stores didn't like McCoy selling the same items to possibly the next door
dime store...so McCoy marked some items Mccoy---for the high dollar
stores...and simply usa for the dime stores...so conceivably you could find
the same item marked eithere way....

There just ain't anything like sittin' on a metal tractor seat for over an

Can I come visit you in Naples, please???

On another note, I found the McCoy dish that one of my employees broke on

From: ACP acpearce@io.com
Subject: [Mccoypottery-talk] more binary data

We had this discussion a few weeks ago and most
people have stopped sending binary data to this
mailing list.

Today, I received list messages, sent by
teedub@gamewood.net and nberlin@swfla.rr.com.
These messages contained "stationary", which is
considered to be BINARY data. (In other words, it
contains codes which you can't type on a keyboard.)

When I opened each of these messages, it froze Netscape.
I had to kill NS and then reboot. Now, in order to
delete these messages, I will have to surround them
with other messages and delete the entire mail sequence.

Yes, we all know PC software is lousy software,
but since we know that, doesn't it make sense to
stop sending binary data, that you KNOW will hose
someone's system, when it is opened?

Since we've discussed this in the past and the problems
have been enumerated by many on the list, I must assume
the perpetrators either don't care what their messages
do to others, or are new members, who didn't go thru
that conversation with us. Which ever, I would ask
that everyone posting to the list, consider what
their message will do to the machine receiving it,
before they hit "send".
Consider how you'd feel if you were a member of 50 mailing
lists and only one, whose messages consistently hose your
system and force you to reboot to recover.
Consider how great you'd feel to lose that 15 minutes
with each of these binary messages and have the small
amount of time you've set aside for processing personal
mail, interrupted.
Chances are, you'd be ticked off, just like I was. :-(

 > Hi list folks

Hello

 >Do My emails offensd anyone?

No, they do not offend, however they are not easy on the eyes, waste
bandwidth, and are mildly annoying. Finally, I hesitate to respond to
them since your mailer appears to encapsulate the output of a text
based email into a tiff image. So when I reply to you I have to copy
the entire message manually otherwise my mail client (even PINE) will
reply to you by listing "image.tiff" as the body of your message in a
response.

 >I have a very light soft textured background on my emails.

Why?

 >I honestly forgot all about it until a jug head sent me a nasty email
a while ago criticizing my background.

Well, given that email is a text based medium most people will be in
agreement that cutesy colors and images should not be used. Again, it
is hard on the eyes, and it wastes resources. I mean imagine reading
"War and Peace" with a silly blue background on blue text. Sheer
madness. My guess is Lev would have gone insane a bit sooner had he
had to write like that as well :-)

 >It is part of my email program and it is very pleasant in my opinion.

It may be pleasant to you on your screen, but my guess is a lot of
people do not even bother to read your posts because of it. I read
just about everything as I monitor and "loosly" manage the list.
However if I where using PINE to view these lists messages, anything
with funky characters, colors, images, etc.,, would end up being
dev/null before it ever got to me.

However, I take most of the posts with a grain of salt, as should most
people since this is not a technical list. I do not set up the list
server to ban the ability to post colored backgrounds either as that
would mean 90%of the people on the list would be upset trying to figure
out why they cannot post.

 >You guys should see some of the options that I have to use.

Options? What on earth are you using?

Looks to me like IncrediMail 2001. I would strongly suggest upgrading,
or using something a bit more modern and intuitive. IncrediMail is just
"Eye Candy" IMHO. It's cute, and free, but lacks quite a bit. You
might look at Eudora or OE. Anyway, just a suggestion.

 >Some make my eyes hurt.

Well, that's just it. Even the one you sent today make eyes hurt.
Rule #1 in Typography class, NEVER USE COLORED BACKGROUNDS WITH
COLORED TEXT. Well, you can get away with it on some headline type, or
in a sentence or two, but anything more than that is too hard on the
eyes.

 >I will start using the blank e-mail.

Probably a good idea on a list. Especially on a busy one where there
is a lot of material to digest and go through.

 >I just wanted the opinion of all involved!!!!!!!

Well you have mine. But like I said, I am not gonna lose sleep over
it, and I am not gonna ban you from the list or scold you like a child.
I just offer up the reasons that people go mad seeing colored
background text. Hope this helps.

 >anyone wanting to read the email sent to me by a jug head from the
list  but not through the list.

You can email me off list if you wish. If it is a list member I would
really like to know. If anyone ever has a problem with anyone on this
list, or any post, please do email listmom@mccoypottery.com

I'm here to keep the peace!

Ouch!!! Then please forgive me for "ripping your head
off". I could not read your email, so I did not know
it was not your fault. I would never have been mean
to you, if I'd known you were not responsible. :-(

When I encounter this type of binary message in my "incoming
list", the mail automatically displays it in the lower window
(a setting I use).
At that point, the message with binary data hangs
Netscape. I can't scroll down to see who started the
thread or anything else. I can only see the stationary
in the lower window and the first few lines of colored
text (in this case). I can't even close Netscape
to get out of the situation. I must kill the Netscape
process, to end the problem. Of course if I immediately
get back into Netscape, it immediately goes back to the
last message I was reading (the bad one) and the whole
thing starts all over again. Talk about irritating!!!
After a reboot, NS Messenger opens without selecting
a message and that gives me a chance to bypass the bad
one.

Something interesting about this situation is that this
is the ONLY mailing list where I receive binary data in
the list messages. I belong to about 50 technical and
recreational lists (no, I don't read all of them all the
time). Many of those lists are not setup to suppress
binary data, however, the members politely send text only.
What is so amazing about this, you ask????
A couple of these lists are SOAP lists (yes, regardless of
the stigma attached, I still watch Days Of Our Lives).
Now, of all the lists I'm on, I would have expected those
2 to be the biggest problem with binary data (and they were,
at first).

I just have to be dumb here. With webTV, I have no idea what binary is.
When I send something, it shows up blue on the black screen to me but I
have no clue how it is received. When I receive things, I get a bit of
everything. The worst is black print on the black screen, which is the
way some things come from ebay. I do think there are worse things in
life than colored backgrounds and print on email, but then I don't know
how I would like having all my email messed up.

This list is ridiculous. I will be sending a longer message to the McCoy
web site owners, but this is just ridiculous. I joined this list to learn
more about McCoy pottery. Instead, what I've learned is that most of the
people who post here are more interested in their egos and their stupid
backgrounds and typeface colors than having any kind of on-topic, pertinent
discussion.

Good bye and good riddance.

Although I believe that rich html and backgrounds do look ok if
subtle I also agree they do take up bandwidth many people with dial
up servers have to wait for them to download and open and some people
in other countries have to pay per use so time is money.

Toms bg was subtle stationary is kewl in the right venue persona
letters etc. not to lists if possible. also anyone with netscape can
set preferences to only get email in text fort no html. If your
netscape crashes then I am guessing you arousing the new Mozilla
7.0? I won't use it if I ever have to give up the 4.7xxx whatever
I will move on to using IE full time and outlook express the new
netscape is junk aol owns sun so they had it remade made it in their
image it is a bad program . My view I tried it and couldn't get
it to function and had to reformat my pc to fix the crash it caused.
Another point the color red is so bright and can be known to
cause seizures in people who have epilepsy and other seizure
disorders many colors can some web sites even have warnings , I
delete anything with flashing text or bright red in it , I see
opening in my email because I have a seizure disorder ( not epilepsy
but there are others ) they are controlled ffor nmany years but I
will not take chances one seizure and a person is unable to drive
etc. until their doctor has to report it to the DMV that they had one
and until he can prove them once again seizure free for over 6 months
your licence is pulled insuraces go higher and so on , so I hope
maybe this will make others think before adding that fancy text and
or bacgrounds in colors to thier post to these lists they can do
harm not just be annoying. .

Dear 'Quita,

I fear that, in your attempts to conform to these folks requirements, you've
changed your email so that it now runs off the page to the right. It's not a
big deal...I certainly can follow it...but this all seems so silly.

When I have trouble with mail, I know it's AOL that is causing it...not
anything that anyone else is doing. When there's something that can be
done...with settings...I think it makes sense to "set them" so that the
majority of folks can read the mail. When there's nothing to be done about
it, I know I'd prefer to have the person rather than an "easier to read"
message.

I said it a couple of weeks ago and I don't hesitate to say it again...life
is full of really difficult challenges. We'll each need to face them, but we
shouldn't have to face adversity in a place where we've come together to
share information about McCoy pottery. Suck it up...get over it...life is
too short for the stupid stuff.

Vicki

Hi Everyone. Came across a planter with plate in my mother in laws
basement today. it is creme in color and has what I would call hob knobs
on it (raised). The letters N and M over one another plus U S A on the
bottom. Nelson McCoy, right? When ? around the early 40's? Anyone
know the value. Some crazing on the inside, and very dirty on the
bottom, but no chips, cracks or anything. Thanks Ruth Ann

It does also have leaves under the rim at the top. It is 5 1/2" tall
and not quite 6" round at the top. The plate is attached to the
planter. It really is a pretty thing. I am so glad I found it. It was
really dirty and had remains of the dirt from a plant inside, but soaked
it for a bit and a little scrubbing and it has all gone. Thanks for your
help, Ruth Ann
