You can preserve cold paint  by not getting it too wet  try wiping with
just a damp  cloth even plain waer will  take off old  coldpaint the
other areas  you can  spot clean  without having to soak them  or  wet
the  whole item. Its  a chore but  worth the effort to  keep  the items
as nice as possible.
