VERO is where a company registers with eBay that only they or their
authorized sellers can sell anything as "new". I forget what it stands for,
but Bullova has a VERO policy I know and if someone sells a "brand new"
Bullova watch, it will get pulled from eBay unless they are authorized by
Bullova first.
Fenton is taking a very common sense approach to this as there are a lot of
us who buy from sales and the gift shop and then resale. They are taking
the auctions case by case and have 2 employees who are watching the auctions
to make sure none of the reproductions are sold as Fenton when they are
fakes or reproductions.
You know, I think that it would be great if one of the McCoy groups would
take up a collection to buy the trademark for McCoy and register it. My
understanding is that currently it is not registered to anyone. The group
could have McCoy pieces commissioned by Heartstone or RRPC or another area
pottery to keep their logo current (which I believe is a part of keeping a
trademark viable). The Heisecy Collectors do this and own the trademark for
Heisey.
It would be a real way to stop the fake McCoys once and for all. I know I
would donate to the cause and I'm sure other serious collectors and dealers
would do likewise.
