I have the Nichols book....From the First to the Latest....... Copyright
1987 and here is how he describes unmarked bottoms

"X" bottom- three cream colored bars across bottom. Cream colored bars are
what to look for. The pic shows two glazed bars, leaving 3 places that are
unglazed and resembling 'bars'

"Y" bottom- two bars across bottom... Bars similar to the ones at each end
are what you are looking for. This pic shows a bottom that is completely
glazed...except for the 2 bars running down the middle...where it stood to
dry, I guess.

"Z" bottom -Only a seam in the mold shows. The seam may be straight (as in
the Monk)or three lines meeting (as in the Leprechaun). This pic shows a
completely glaze-less bottom

I've been scouring my area looking for this book ever since I read the
request, but haven't found one yet. I have a scanner and will attempt to get
these two pages that discuss "unmarked" marks. In the meantime, if you can
describe a jar, or have a particular one you want identified I'll be happy
to look in my copy.
