Hi Diane,
  If it is a large churn, the 4 more than likely indicates that it is 4 gallon capacity.
  Most of the mccoy churns and crocks I have seen have  "M" and a number indicating size. Pictures would be helpful as there were and are many potteries that made and some continue to make crocks.
